College Outreach Prevention Education - C.O.P.E.

The abuse of alcohol and other drugs is a problem affecting all colleges and universities. For many students, being away from home for the first time provides an opportunity to experiment with new behaviors in a relatively unregulated atmosphere. The combination of increased freedom from parental control, the social acceptability of chemical use and the availability and access to substances of abuse, produces a volatile and dangerous ground for addictive disorders.

The C.O.P.E. Program is designed to assist colleges and universities in identifying, assessing and treating graduate and undergraduate students with chemical abuse problems. The Addiction Institute of New York has designed an intervention program that gives colleges and universities the following services:
• Rapid access to addiction specialists to evaluate students with substance use problems
• The ability to provide the appropriate recommendations for ongoing care
• Professional consultation for university counseling center clinicians on addiction related issues

The program includes
• On-site assessment
• Comprehensive evaluation
• Motivation enhancement counseling
• Group therapy for substance abuse
• Inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment
• Training of university staff
