Consultation and Liaison Program

Addiction remains the most misdiagnosed and under-diagnosed condition, affecting patients who come into contact with healthcare systems at any level. Studies indicate that a large number of patients admitted to hospitals suffer from conditions either directly or indirectly related to the use and abuse of addictive substances. Patients are most often discharged with these underlying problems neither identified nor treated. These issues also occur in the work place where fitness for duty policies may not exist, or are vague and not operationalized. Impaired employees are not identified, appropriately referred, or treated. Productivity is lost and the employee stays sick. The Addiction Institute of New York's Consultation and Liaison Service addresses these issues both at the bedside and in the community at large.

Bedside Services include:
Consultations with patients, families, physicians and multi-disciplinary treatment teams
Assessments, interventions, and referrals for treatment
Motivational interviewing techniques with patients who may struggle with their need for addiction services
Education of families of patients at risk
Group and individual education for hospitalized patients regarding addiction and HIV transmission
and/or AIDS
Education of patients regarding risk assessment and risk reduction
Education and training for multi disciplinary hospital staff on the identification of patients with
suspected substance abuse problems

Community services include education and training on collaboratively identified addiction issues.
